Graduate students in French are provided robust professional development in teaching the French language and the literatures and cultures of the French-speaking world. This professional development includes:
- Theoretically and conceptually driven coursework, in which post-communicative approaches are emphasized including multiliteracies and genre pedagogies
- Teaching elementary- and intermediate-level language courses wherein authentic texts and multimodality are prioritized as a way to develop students’ literacies in French
- Inclusive approaches to teaching and assessment, which are introduced in graduate pedagogy coursework and infuse the instructional approaches and assessment tools used in lower-level French language courses in our program
- Opportunities for serving in leadership positions such as Head Teaching Assistant of French, which allows a release from classroom teaching and the chance to mentor other Teaching Assistants and participate in curricular planning and implementation
- Completion of Teaching Portfolio components year-by-year to maximize readiness for the academic job market
