Graduate student Mathilde Garner was one of a select number of students to receive the 2025 Language Institute Awards for Instructional Innovation with Generative AI. The awardees were among 35+ participants in a semester-long Language Institute seminar in Fall 2024 on Generative AI and the Future of Language Education, a forum for critical engagement with the potential affordances–and the potential pitfalls and ethical concerns–posed by generative AI to collegiate language education.
The Spring 2025 awards are to pilot an instructional activity or create instructional materials using generative AI. Award recipients will share the outcomes of their projects in Fall 2025:
Mathilde Garner, Doctoral Program in Second Language Acquisition and Department of French and Italian (French), to use generative AI in task planning for writing projects in intermediate French courses that develop students’ critical thinking and writing skills. The project is in collaboration with Professor Heather Willis Allen, Department of French and Italian.
