Maps and Territories: Navigation, Globalization, and Belonging in Contemporary French Fiction
Publication Type:
Book
Publication Year:
In progress

Through close readings of novels by Olivier Rolin, Marie Darrieussecq,  Michel Houellebecq, Chloé Delaume, Lydie Salvayre, Jean-Philippe Toussaint, Virginie Despentes, Philippe Vasset, and Jean Rolin, this book seeks to answer the following questions: How do we make sense of and meaningfully map our place within the world-system of accelerated globalization? What forces make this difficult, especially in the context of France? How does contemporary French fiction suggest ways these forces can be overcome? What new forms of belonging consequently emerge, in the ongoing quest to exist meaningfully in an increasingly crowded, complicated, and precarious world?

Sonic Space in Djibril Diop Mambety's Films
Author:
Publication Type:
Book
Publication Year:
2017

The art of Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambety’s cinema lies in the tension created between the visual narrative and the aural narrative. His work has been considered hugely influential, and his films bridge Western practices of filmmaking and oral traditions from West Africa. Mambety’s film Touki Boukiis considered one of the foundational works of African cinema. Vlad Dima proposes a new reading of Mambety’s entire filmography from the perspective of sound. Following recent analytical patterns in film studies that challenge the primacy of the visual, Dima claims that Mambety uses voices, noise, and silence as narrative tools that generate their own stories and sonic spaces. By turning an ear to cinema, Dima pushes African aesthetics to the foreground of artistic creativity and focuses on the critical importance of sound in world cinema.

Early Modern Humanism and Postmodern Antihumanism in Dialogue
Publication Type:
Book
Publication Year:
2016

This book employs perspectives from continental philosophy, intellectual history, and literary and cultural studies to breach the divide between early modernist and modernist thinkers. It turns to early modern humanism in order to challenge late 20th-century thought and present-day posthumanism. This book  addresses contemporary concerns such as the moral responsibility of the artist, the place of religious beliefs in our secular societies, legal rights extended to nonhuman species, the sense of ‘normality’ applied to the human body, the politics of migration, individual political freedom and international terrorism. It demonstrates how early modern humanism can bring new perspectives to postmodern antihumanism and even invite us to envision a humanism of the future.

Dante and the Dynamics of Textual Exchange
Publication Type:
Book
Publication Year:
2016

Dante and the Dynamics of Textual Exchange is the first book-length study to explore the question of poetry and genre in Dante’s Vita Nova (ca. 1292–1294). In paying particular attention to complex and multifaceted interactions between different cultures in Italy in the thirteenth century, this study illuminates the multicultural and plurilinguistic society transitioning from the feudal court to the modern city-state, advanced by the rising mercantile class. Working at the intersection of textual, material, and cultural elements, this study complements the current state of scholarship by providing information and answers informed by an in-depth analysis of the manuscript culture and its role in the birth and development of European vernacular traditions. Furthermore,Dante and the Dynamics of Textual Exchange expands the literature’s understanding of the dynamics between a text and its material support by looking at this relationship within a broader framework of intercultural exchange, which suggests an increased dynamics and fluidity between cultures.

Le vivant, l’informe et le dégoût: Baudelaire, Flaubert et l’art de la (dé)composition
Publication Type:
Article
Publication Year:
2015

Baudelaire and Flaubert were both attracted to the question of the shapeless and the aesthetic challenges it raises. In more ways than one, the poem “Une charogne”, as well as the misadventures of Bouvard and Pécuchet, faced with putrescent matter, fall within the aesthetics of disgust. The shapeless and putrefaction also serve as a springboard for a claim to formal mastery aiming to make the filthy give birth to the beautiful. In Flaubert’s case, the mention of decomposed matter promotes an aesthetic ideal of autogenesis that echoes Félix-Archimède Pouchet’s theories on spontaneous generation.

Le Sublime et le Grotesque
Publication Type:
Book
Publication Year:
2014

The aim of Le Sublime et le grotesque is to pinpoint those moments in literary and artistic history when grotesque horror turns into sublime terror, when sublime rapture is spurred by grotesque grimaces. Such investigation spans broadly from Sophocles and Pseudo-Longinus to Amélie Nothomb, and Slavoj Žižek. It involves major authors from French, English and German literary history: Montaigne and Shakespeare, Molière and Racine, Diderot and Kant, Hoffmann and Baudelaire, Schlegel and Hugo, Flaubert and Céline… It leads the reader beyond the beautiful, to a place where formal harmonies are distorted and the unity of meaning is dissolved. Such aesthetic extremes are often seen as terms of an alternative: we laugh at grotesque monstrosities or stand in awe in front of sublime grandeur. But what happens when these extremes meet? Answers to this question are provided in this volume by Baldine Saint Girons, Michel Magnien, Christian Biet, Michel Jeanneret, Richard Goodkin, Anne Vila, Hans Adler, Dominique Peyrache-Leborgne, Florence Vatan, and Jan Miernowski.

La beauté de la haine: Essais de misologie littéraire
Publication Type:
Book
Publication Year:
2014

Can one consider hatred to be beautiful? The title of the book does not seek to justify such an ugly passion, but rather to explore the most extreme hatred, the type of pure hatred that does not need political, economic, or psychological motivation for mass killings and destruction. Such self-sufficient hatred can be better grasped when considered as an aesthetic principle. The beauty of hatred informs key moments of French literary writing between early and post-modernity: anterotic poetry of the Renaissance, as well as the most vitriolic pamphlets of religious wars. The beauty of hatred is prominent in Corneille’s and Racine’s conception of tragedy, Rousseau’s thinking about literature, and Céline’s perverse vision of the sublime. Finally, hatred becomes an autonomous object of art, and manifests itself in the contemporary novel through pastiche and parody. When writing about the hatred that has destroyed her country, Nobel laureate Wisława Szymborska admitted with irony: “Let’s not lie to ourselves: she is capable of creating beauty…” In his book, Jan Miernowski takes these words quite literally, showing that although hatred can indeed create beauty, only literature has an unlimited capacity to explain and heal the world.

Divided into four sections («beginnings», «transgression», «conformism» and «epilogue»), this book reconstructs the complex intellectual biography of Francesco Pona, physician and writer of Verona (1595-1655). With the aid of precious and often unedited sources, the author traces his education in Padua and Bologna until the straight refusal of the libertine themes he experimented with the Lucerna of 1625. The volume includes a full bibliography of Pona’s manuscripts and printed books.

Vasari, Leonardo, and ‘il vero ritratto del tradimento et inumanità,’” Sixteenth Century Journal Vol. XLII No. 3
Publication Type:
Article
Publication Year:
2011

This analysis of Giorgio Vasari’s 1568 addendum to the vita of Leonardo explores Vasari’s rhetorical and narrative strategies to dramatize the importance of both visual artist and patron’s possessing l’intelletto d’arte—“the intelligence of art.” A close reading of Vasari’s tale about Leonardo and the Duke of Milan leads to new interpretive avenues, which reveal how Vasari prioritized his own competing values within a rhetorical program. He uses his supplemental raccontino for a sophisticated discussion of art: in this discourse between Leonardo and his patron, Vasari stages an epistemological debate. He fills his narrative with subplots to emphasize the moral contrast between Christ and Judas in the Last Supper. Focusing on an ethical interpretation of style, Vasari presents Leonardo’s good character and artistic intelligence as the sources of the beauty and achievement found in the cenacolo. Building on a comprehensive system of artistic best practices, this narrative parallels the pursuit of an ideal concept of collective good that is nourished by Vasari’s poetic generosity.

The Cambridge Companion to Montaigne (Cambridge Companions to Philosophy)
Publication Type:
Edited Volume
Publication Year:
2005

Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) is known for his innovative method of philosophical inquiry which mixes the anecdotal and the personal with serious critiques of human knowledge, politics and the law. His rejection of fanaticism and cruelty and his admiration for the civilizations of the New World mark him as a predecessor of modern notions of tolerance and acceptance of otherness. An international team of contributors explores the range of his philosophy and also examines the social and intellectual contexts in which his thought was expressed.
